This site has been written by Mr Ian McDermott, who is a specialist Knee Surgeon based in Central London. Mr McDermott is the founder of the Sports Orthopaedics UK Group and the London Sports Orthopaedics practice. Mr McDermott sees patients in the London Sports Orthopaedics clinic at 31 Old Broad Street, in the middle of The City, and performs his surgery at The London Bridge Hospital, which one of one London's very best private hospitals.

 

Mr McDermott is one of the top knee surgeons in London. He is full time private, having left the NHS in 2007. Mr McDermott was the youngest ever surgeon to be elected onto the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 2003 he was awarded the President's Medal of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee for his research into meniscal repair. In 2004 Mr McDermott was awarded a Master of Surgery higher degree by Imperial College for his research into meniscal transplantation. In 2005 he was given an honorary appointment as a Professor Associate at Brunel University in the School of Sport & Education. He is a member of the European Meniscal Transplantation Study Group and he is the Honorary Secretary of the UK Meniscal Study Group. Mr McDermott is also on the Editorial Boards of the 'Orthopaedics and Trauma Journal' and 'The American Journal of Sports Medicine' as well as being on the Reviewers Panel of The British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons and The Journal of Biomechanics.

Mr McDermott has a particular specialist interest in arthroscopic knee surgery, particularly in complex multiple soft tissue reconstructions, including meniscal replacement surgery, articular cartilage repair and ligament reconstructions. Mr McDermott is one of the UK's leading authorities on meniscal transplantation and on 'biological knee reconstruction' and he also has a specialist interest in the use of high performance custom made total and partial knee replacements for the management of severe knee arthritis in younger patients.
